In an attempt to gain control over the shipping routes that existed through the Suez Canal, and to have rights over the massive amounts of oil that existed here, Hitler targeted North Africa for one of his territorial claims. This battle would evolved into a showdown between Montgomery and Rommel. Bernard Montgomery and his Desert Rats fought against Rommel and the Afrika Korps. However, the Germans fail at what would become a major turning point battle at El Alamein in 1942. This battle showed that the Allies were capable of beating the German troops, and it prevented the Germans from taking the Suez Canal and the oil that they were after in the first place. The Americans would join the battles in 1942 under the command of Dwight D Eisenhower.
