WWII was a war like none had ever seen, fought on sea, land and air it was very difficult to see who was going to come out on top. The German U-boat fleet which was operating out of Germany but moved to Norway was very effective and hard to detect. By hunting in 'Wolf packs' or teams they were much more effective at neutralizing targets. Fighting a tonnage war, which meant seeing how many tons they could sink, the German U-boats were a force to be reckoned with. They also began to take out civilian ships and cargo ships to try and diminish the amount of supplies the allied front were able to receive. But this lead to advances in sonar technology and the use of convoy systems. Using Aircraft carriers and longranged bombers the fleets were able to have more cover by air as well.
